Naperville
Big city styles and small town smiles – a snappy slogan Naperville takes delight in using to describe itself to visitors.
Few tourists would disagree with that affectionate summing up of a picturesque city once voted the second best place to live in the United States. Naperville has everything going for it and as an added bonus is within easy reach of Chicago whether by road or rail. It is 30 miles to the Chicago Loop and 18 miles to Medinah Country Club. Downtown Naperville is recognised as one of the most exciting and popular shopping and dining destinations in the Midwest with so much to do whatever your taste.
Naperville Riverwalk was built by residents in 1981 to commemorate the city’s 150th birthday. Since then, it has become a focal point of the community and is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful spots in the region.
Its covered bridges, fountains, landscaping and distinctive shepherd’s crook light poles have become symbolic of Naperville’s ties to its historic past as the oldest settlement in DuPage County.
Visitors travel from far and near to enjoy the splendour of the treelined Riverwalk and its quaint restaurants and shops. Known as the ‘Crown Jewel of Naperville’ the Riverwalk attracts lunchtime walkers, families and early morning joggers.
Stroll along the brick-paved winding paths of the Riverwalk, view the art pieces of the Century Walk, have a picnic at the pavilion or enjoy an outdoor concert.
At the base of Rotary Hill stands the majestic Millennium Carillon, one of the few musical instruments in the world this large. Some 72 bronze bells resonate at the top of the tower and it is one of only four carillons worldwide spanning a full six octaves. Musical selections are played on the bells three times during the day.
Visitors can take the 253 steps to the top of the tower and enjoy the spectacular view, including the Chicago skyline on a clear day.
Paddle boats can be rented at the Paddleboat Quarry while you can travel back in time at the Naper Settlement, a museum village which shows how the area was transformed from a frontier outpost into an affluent city.
Take a trip on a trolley tour which blends the past with the present and highlights the city’s growth or visit the children’s museum where the whole family will find fun and educational activities.
Naperville has a great reputation for arts and culture with indoor and outdoor art displays and a new Theatre District which boasts a number of venues, including the fabulous Wentz Concert Hall with its amazing acoustics.
A quieter time can be spent meandering through beautiful trails and path in the Forest Preserves.
If you want to shop then Naperville has countless options with a contrasting range of boutiques and shopping outlets.
You will also be spoiled for choice on the restaurant front and with so much on offer it is easy to see why Naperville is such a popular destination.
