The Ryder Cup 2020

If there's a Ryder Cup to watch then Whistling Straits has to be right up there on the leader board of golfing destinations.

Mention of the name itself is enough to excite golf fans, tingling with anticipation at the prospect of Europe and the United States renewing their rivalry in September 2020.

The match will be contested on the Straits Course, flagship course at Whistling Straits, and renowned as arguably one of America's greatest championship venues.

The Ryder Cup is making its debut in the state of Wisconsin and for the away side conditions might feel strangely familiar.

That is because Whistling Straits replicates the ancient seaside links courses of the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Nestled along a two-mile stretch of Lake Michigan with eight holes hugging the water, the course is open and exposed to the wind and elements.

Its coastal links-style set-up means there are few large trees or woods on the course but the challenges are many with vast rolling greens, deep pot bunkers and grass-topped dunes.

The site was an abandoned airfield before famous course architect Pete Dye stamped his magic on this plot of land to create a golfing masterpiece which has been the scene of many epic battles.

The Straits Course has hosted the PGA Championship on three occasions, most recently when Jason Day secured a three-shot victory over Jordan Spieth in 2015.

Five years earlier, Martin Kaymer won a play-off with Bubba Watson, while Vijay Singh also needed extra holes to bear Chris DiMarco and Justin Leonard in 2004. The 2007 US Senior Open was staged here as well with Brad Bryant the winner.

It's next major date in the golfing calendar is from Friday, September 25, to Sunday, September 27, when another Ryder Cup classic is held.

Padraig Harrington has the honour of captaining Europe, while Steve Stricker will lead a US side aiming to restore pride after a 17½-10½ points defeat in France in 2018.

Europe have only lost twice in nine meetings since the turn of the century - both times on American soil - and their latest defence of the coveted trophy promises to be another compelling edition in this enchanting Ryder Cup story.
